Walls have always been a canvas to cover; carved and painted drawings on cave walls and ceilings found in Asia and Europe date back to around 40,000 years ago, with the oldest form of rock art originating in Africa more than 50,000 years ago. The theory behind all of these wall drawings is that they were not just created to be decorative, but as a means of communication, a place to highlight beliefs in spiritual worlds and to document wildlife.

In today’s world our walls still present an opportunity for expression and are a place to embrace and celebrate the natural world around us. Those creating rock art could only be inspired by their immediate surroundings and the limits of their imagination; inspiration today is boundless and can be drawn from diverse cultures, design and art around the globe. The motivations behind the Zoffany collection are not only from the world around us, but from an increasingly wide range of sources such as the extensive archive, fine art, architecture and antiques.

Wall art today would naturally be thought of as something which can be hung in a frame; the Zoffany studio have challenged this perception by experimenting and exploring new ways of working with materials and designing pieces of art to grace entire walls.

The ‘AKAISHI WALLCOVERINGS’ heralded a new chapter of wallpaper creation for Zoffany; textural patterns were woven as jacquards, paper-backed and in some cases digitally printed. Each wallcovering features an interpretation of the natural world around us, captured in a Japanese handwriting that features spontaneous and painterly brush strokes. These atmospheric designs were innovated through layering substrates and techniques to add a zen-like ambiance to the interior spaces they adorn, resulting in striking wall art.
